I’d like to go through the digital steps of creating Ancient View (see previous post).  The idea for the piece began with a fractal, but so many people think that you run a script and get a fractal and that’s it. The creation of the fractal is usually only the first step for me.Original Fractal

The original fractal looked like the first image. I was fascinated by it and started to see possibilities.

I began painting in Photoshop with a small brush with a color that I felt suggested ancient earth.

The image began to take on shape and the feeling that I was looking for.

More painting resulted in this image.

I then began work on the background. For this, I switched to Corel Painter.  I painted the background with the ancient feeling that I was looking for . Layering the two files together produced the finished digital part of the process after a few level and color tweeks.

I was ready to enlarge the print, slice it into 4 “windows” and print transfers. I covered a 20 x 20 canvas with copper foil,  then transfered the “windows” to the foil canvas. Acrylic glazes, highlighting of the fossil lines with black acrylic, and generally aging and distressing the copper finalized the mixed media piece “Ancient View” which is part of my Copper Window Series.

About

Hi, I'm Jeri and I'm a digital artist. I get a lot of questions about how I work and a lot of "What the heck is it?" comments when I'm in a show. So I decided to convert my "Fire & Ice - copper & glass art miniatures" site to a blog to discuss digital art, imaging, and mixed media.
